Four ways to break your fast on delicious dates

After a day of fasting, Muslims all over the world break their fast on dates and a glass of water. Dates are not just delicious – they’re also a great source of nutrients and are full of energy. There’s loads of ways you can dates! We’ve got some tasty top tips for breaking your fast with dates. 

This is a simple but tasty way of taking dates to the next level. The creaminess of the yogurt and crunchiness of the walnuts make a great combination with dates. They are also more likely to give you even more vitamins and keep you satisfied for longer. 

After you remove the pit from the dates, you are left with a huge gap. Why not stuff that gap with some of our favourite stuffings for a quick, fulfilling, flavoursome date: 

  • Peanut butter and banana  
  • Walnut and coconut flakes  
  • Spinach and cheese  
  • Tahini and almonds  
  • Anything you fancy!

Date balls are a quick and easy snack to make. They’re an excellent snack to break your fast on: a great source of energy, full of flavour and no added sugar.  

  • Start off with approximately 10 pitted dates that are soft. Soak them in water beforehand if needed. 
  • Measure 100g of any type of nut.
  • Blend in a food processor or blender until it forms a sticky dough-like mixture.  
  • Scoop out one or two tablespoons of the mixture and roll it into small balls in the palm of your hand.
  • Decorate with any toppings you like, like blended nuts, shredded coconut, cocoa powder or even coffee. 
  • Refrigerate your date balls for later or enjoy them now.

A smoothie is a great way to get hydrated and get some nutrients and energy quickly and deliciously –plus dates make great smoothies!

Here’s our favourite date smoothie recipe: 

  • 4 or 5 pitted dates
  • 230ml milk or fortified non-dairy milk 
  • 1 banana (or a frozen one) 
     
  • 35g oats  
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter 
  • 4 ice cubes  
  • 1 shot espresso  
  • 2 tsp flax seeds or chia seeds  
  • 1 tsp cinnamon   
  • 2 tsp cocoa powder  
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract 

All you have to do is blend the above together, pour into a glass, and enjoy!
