Basler Leckerli

Basler Leckerli

Are you watching Eurovision this weekend and looking for some snack inspiration? Then you’re in the right place! We’ve been busy making Basler Läckerli. They are traditional Swiss spiced cookies – filled with nuts, citrus, and spices. We recommend making them the night before Eurovision, ready to enjoy for the final on Saturday! board with lemons on

Makes 20

  • 100g almonds
  • 100g candied orange peel (from the baking aisle)
  • ½ lemon for zesting
  • 200g maple syrup or honey
  • 75g sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of ground cloves
  • 250g white flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder

For the glaze

  • 100g powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp water

Recipe adapted from Avobelle

  1. Finely chop the almonds and candied orange peel and place in a bowl. Then grate the zest of half a lemon and add to the mixture.
  2. Add maple syrup OR honey to a small saucepan. Over a low heat stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and cloves until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Remove the pan from heat, then add to your almond mixture. Mix together.
  4. In another bowl, combine the flour and baking powder. Then add it to the mixture. Knead into a dough while still warm.
  5. Sprinkle some flour on a sheet of baking paper and roll out the dough into a rectangle 8-10 mm thick. Transfer it to a baking sheet.
  6. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rest for one hour.
  7. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan oven)/ gas mark 4.
  8. Remove the kitchen towel and bake the dough for about 15 minutes. Then let it cool completely.
  9. Mix powdered sugar and water until a thick glaze forms. Spread the glaze over the cooled dough and let it dry completely.
  10. Cut away the uneven edges, then cut into rectangular shapes. Serve and enjoy!
  • Perfect for a Eurovision watch-along party – made into squares and easy to share!
  • Full of flavour – with plenty of spices and zest, these cookies are so tasty. They’re traditionally eaten at Christmas, but you can enjoy them all year round.
  • You can make them without nuts if you, or someone in your house, has a nut allergy. There’ll be less crunch, but they will still be tasty.
