Healthy hot chocolate
We’re heading into the festive season and this time of year really lends itself to hot chocolates. Here at Beezee, we are firm believers in not restricting yourself. So if you want to enjoy a hot chocolate this year, go for it! But remember, moderation is a key part of a healthy lifestyle.
We are also big believers in the power of healthy swaps. So if you’re after a healthier alternative to a hot chocolate, then you’re in the right spot. We really love this recipe.
You probably have everything you need to make this hot chocolate already sitting in your kitchen. It takes five minutes to make. Warning – once you try this, you might never buy hot chocolate packets again!

Serves 1
- 250ml milk – dairy or dairy-alternative (soya, almond, oat)
- 2 ½ tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 ½ tbsp maple syrup (plus extra to taste)
- Pinch of salt
- 1 tbsp chopped dark chocolate or chocolate chips
- ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract
- Shaved dark chocolate or chocolate chips for serving
Method
- In a small saucepan, heat your milk until it starts to simmer.
- Whisk in the cocoa powder, maple syrup, and salt. Then add the chocolate chips and vanilla. Whisk and heat until the chocolate is melted and smoothly combined.
- Taste and add more maple syrup if you’d like it sweeter. Pour into a mug, and top with extra chocolate as desired.
There’s plenty of ways you mix up this recipe – we’ll cover them below. Also, this recipe was inspired by Well Plated.
Make your healthy chocolate your own
Cinnamon hot chocolate: Pop a cinnamon stick in with the milk while it’s heating. Fish it out before drinking, or leave in as a garnish.
Extra luxurious: Melt half a tablespoon of coconut oil in with everything else—it makes it feel really indulgent.
Festive flavours – A sprinkle of cardamom, ginger, nutmeg can all be welcome warming additions.
Chocolate orange – Add some orange zest for a classic Christmassy flavour!
These are just some of our suggestions. You have a play around with it until you find your perfect cup! Let us know how you get on making this recipe on tag us on @beezeehealth on Instagram!
