Fizz Free February: Ready to take on the challenge?

Fizz Free February is a month-long challenge that encourages families to cut down on sugary, fizzy drinks. It’s all about finding tasty alternatives and making healthier choices together.
Here are some easy tips to help your family go fizz-free!
1. Swap fizzy and sugary drinks for water
Water is the best drink you can choose! It’s free, healthy, and keeps you hydrated without any added sugar. But we know it’s not always the most exciting option, especially for kids.
If your children don’t like plain water, try adding fruits to make it more fun. Chop up some fruit and freeze it in an ice-cube tray. It makes drinking water more enjoyable for kids and saves you prep time! How many colours can you get in a glass?
2. Use smaller glasses
Pouring sugary drinks into smaller glasses means you’ll automatically drink less. Over time, this can help reduce your sugar intake without anyone even noticing!
3. Make your own smoothies
Store-bought smoothies can be loaded with added sugars. Why not try making your own at home? Use fresh or frozen fruits, a bit of yogurt, and maybe some oats or seeds if you like. Your kids can help with the blending, making it a fun, healthy activity for everyone! Remember, only a small glass is needed as blended fruit still contains sugars.
4. Read labels carefully
If you buy a lot of drinks from the supermarket, it’s important to read the labels properly. Drinks marketed as “healthy” or “natural” can still have high amounts of sugar. As a rule of thumb, look for drinks with no added sugar or ones that contain less than 5g of sugar per 100ml.
At Beezee Families, we have a whole session on label reading and portion sizes!
5. Choose unsweetened drinks
A small glass of fruit juice (150ml), milk, or unsweetened flavoured water is fine. But remember, the goal is to switch to water completely, as sweet flavours can leave us craving more sweet foods and drinks afterward.
6. Limit sugary snacks
Sugary snacks and drinks often go hand in hand. If your child is having a sugary snack, they’re likely to reach for a fizzy drink to go with it. Try replacing sweet snacks with healthier alternatives like fruit, nuts, or crackers with cheese.
7. Brush your teeth
Encourage your family to brush their teeth at least twice a day and after having any sugary or acidic drinks. This helps protect tooth enamel and prevent cavities, ensuring your little ones have strong and healthy teeth!
8. Get everyone involved
Cutting down on sugar and fizzy drinks works best when the whole family is on board. Make it a team effort and challenge each other to make healthier choices. Try a family water challenge or set up a reward system for each week that everyone stays fizzy drink-free.
